Illustrated portrait representing the intersection of business, technology, and security

Who I Am

I’m John Shelton — an IT consultant and security professional with a passion for helping people and businesses use technology with confidence.

I currently serve as the VP of IT Services at Lucky 13 Solutions, based out of Rochester, NY, supporting businesses throughout the United States. In this role, I focus on aligning technology, security, and operational strategy with real business outcomes.

Technology should enable, not intimidate. Whether I’m working with executive leadership, supporting managed service environments, or advising on security best practices, my goal is always the same: make technology work for the business — not the other way around.

What I Do

I work at the intersection of business, technology, and security.

My focus areas include:

  • IT Leadership & Strategy
Helping organizations make smart, sustainable technology decisions that align with long‑term business goals.

  • Cybersecurity & Risk Awareness
Translating security concepts into plain language so leaders understand why protections matter — not just what tools to deploy.

  • Managed Service Provider (MSP) Operations
Supporting MSP environments, client portals, access controls, and password hygiene to keep systems secure, scalable, and manageable.

  • Practical Technology Guidance
Cutting through complexity to focus on solutions that actually work in the real world.

I take a business‑first, technology‑second approach — because tools only matter when they solve real problems.

How I Work

I value:

  • ✅ Clear, honest communication
  • ✅ Practical solutions over buzzwords
  • ✅ Security that reduces risk without adding friction
  • ✅ Long‑term relationships built on trust

I don’t believe in fear‑based security or over‑engineering. I believe in thoughtful, intentional choices that support how people and businesses actually operate.

Beyond Work

Outside of work, my life revolves around family, learning, and staying involved.

I’ve been married to my wife, Liz, since 2014. She’s a CIO for a national Aerospace & Defense company, and we both share a deep appreciation for how technology and leadership intersect — both professionally and at home.

We have two boys (10 and 7) who keep us constantly on the move. They’re heavily involved in sports, playing travel hockey and lacrosse, which means I spend a lot of time helping coach, cheering from the sidelines, and working from wherever the day takes us.

We also recently added a new member to the family — Bauer, our 12‑week‑old Golden Retriever — who has quickly become a full‑time job of his own.

This balance between work, family, and life strongly influences how I think about technology: it needs to be reliable, secure, and flexible enough to support life as it actually happens.

Technology works best when people understand it. That’s what I aim to help with.
